Reminder: Picture Retakes Thursday, December 10th
at 9:30 am on the stage.
This Thursday, December 10, is picture retake day. It will be first thing in the morning, so if your child was absent, is new, or their portrait package needs to be redone, make sure their teacher is aware. A volunteer parent will come to each classroom to escort students to the stage. Every student should be photographed for our database, regardless of whether you order a portrait package. Please get your retake packages or order envelopes to teachers before or by the start of school on Thursday. We are very excited to announce that Farmigo is coming to our school! Farmigo is an online farmers market and certified Benefit Company, which delivers fresh, seasonal produce sourced from local farms once a week.
We have decided to partner with Farmigo because they will deliver fantastic produce, meats, dairy, cheese, eggs and artisanal goods to the Laurelhurst community, making it easier than ever to make sure our kids are eating right. The food is all harvested to order, so it’s super fresh – and buying from small farms supports sustainable practices and the local economy. Even better, with enough orders, 10% of the sales will be donated to Laurelhurst Elementary to fund initiatives at the school.

You have every week until Sunday, at midnight, to place your order. The next day, the farmers and producers harvest and pack your items, to be delivered every Wednesday. Two New & EASY ways to share your photos with the yearbook staff
1.) We now have access to an app that you can get on your phone that will allow you to instantly upload your phone pictures directly to our yearbook. The app is called PICTAVO COMMUNITY and is available through the App Store and Google play.
2.) For the pictures that are stored on your computer, please go to http://community.pictavo.com to upload to the yearbook.
**For both the app and computer, you will have to create an account and provide our school ID. Our school ID is 58285.
Once you are logged in you will see a list of folders. Please choose the folder that matches your picture. For example, if you have field trip pictures from Ms. Bonn’s class. Just locate the Bonn folder and upload your pictures. If the picture also includes children from the other first grade classes, choose the First Grade folder. Examples of other folders include Halloween, Safety Patrol, Watch Dogs, etc. Please limit your uploads to your best and favorite pictures.
Also new this year is ONLINE ORDERING! You can order your yearbook directly through the app or the web. More information on this to come.

Does your child have an upcoming birthday? Is there an upcoming graduation from elementary school? Are there grandparents that would like to donate? Please consider supporting the Laurelhurst Library anytime this year by donating a book in your child’s honor. All you have to do is fill out the form available here or outside the main office all year long, and send in $17. Mr. Brown will purchase a book for your child OR you may purchase the book yourself and bring it in to the library. News from Friends of Laurelhurst Foundation
Join Friends of Laurelhurst – Make a Lasting Difference For Your Kids and THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
The Friends of Laurelhurst Foundation is a nonprofit community group dedicated to the establishment of a $1 million endowment for the benefit of Laurelhurst Elementary School children. Our 545 Campaign challenges families to contribute $500 annually for 5 years to enable the Foundation to achieve this goal. To date we have raised $850,000 and distributed $150,000 to the school. We hold several social events and every spring, the Foundation celebrates its 545 Donors with a special evening of complimentary wine tasting and dinner at the charming and delightful JM Cellars in Woodinville.

News from the School
Laurelhurst School has a program in November/December called The Giving Wreath. We have some families in our school that can use some extra help during the holidays. Our Giving Wreath is up outside the school office.
This year we will also be collecting grocery gift cards for some of the families as well. There are no tags for the grocery gift cards, but if you would like to donate one, please bring it to Susan in the office. Please contact Susan for more info: [email protected]org
NOTE: If you take a gift tag and are unable to fulfill it, please notify Susan (or bring the tag back to the wreath) as soon as possible, so we can problem solve and not leave a child without a gift. PLEASE DO NOT LOSE YOUR TAG.
The bright-yellow 2015-16 school directory booklets are going home today with your family messenger (youngest child in the family). Please ask your child for it, so it doesn’t get buried in a backpack.
If you wish to purchase an additional booklet copy (for the nanny, the car, your office…), they are available to purchase in the office for $2.00 (exact change or a check payable to: Laurelhurst PTA). The smartphone “app” directory will be updated with 2015-16 info in the coming weeks.

Donate Your “Gently Used” Books to Laurelhurst
Laurelhurst Teachers would like to expand their student libraries. Are you looking for a place to donate books your children have outgrown? We are looking for high quality books that have been “gently used” to supplement leveled libraries. Also, Sound Partners still needs sets of Bob Books. If your children are finished with them, consider giving them to us!
Please NO preK books. Also, we do not need Captain Underpants, scary books, or generally inappropriate books. Please do send early elementary or chapter books. Laurelhurst are learning to be UPSTANDER’S. The 5th Grader’s and I led an all-school assembly on what an UPSTANDER is. We taught the school what an Upstander is and what they can do to be an Upstander.
Upstander is: Someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right. Upstander’s stand up for what is right and do their best to help support someone who is being hurt or left out.
Each month we will focus on a quality of an Upstander. For the month of December we will focus on: KINDNESS. How we can as an Upstander be kind to one another.
I encourage you to talk about ways to be an Upstander and share ways that they have been an Upstander!

From time to time, our normal operating hours or transportation services may be adjusted due to ice or snow. If inclement weather makes a schedule change necessary, the decision will be communicated through the following methods:
• Seattle Public Schools’ district and school websites
• Automated phone calls or email messages from the district to parents or guardians
• The district’s Twitter page
• Local media outlets
Options for Schedule Changes
Full-day school cancellation/closing: Students should not report to school. No preschool or head start classes.
Early dismissal: If the decision is made to dismiss schools early, the district will notify parents or guardians of the early release using School Messenger automated calls.
Delayed school opening with regular bus routes: Two-hour late start with buses operating on regular routes. No door-to-door transportation service. No preschool or head start classes.
As an example, if your student has a scheduled pick-up time of 7 a.m., you can expect the bus to arrive at approximately 9 a.m.
Delayed school opening with snow route service: Two-hour late start with buses operating on snow routes*. No preschool or head start classes.
*When buses operate on snow routes, SPS buses travel exclusively on roads that are maintained by the City of Seattle and receive snow removal. The stop location and time differs from normal bus assignment.
For those students who use King County’s Metro bus service for school transportation, please visit the Metro online guide for their emergency ice and snow schedule. metro.kingcounty.gov/alerts/snow/
Family Preparation for Inclement Weather
It is the responsibility of each family to have an inclement weather plan in place that can be put into action on short notice. We ask that you make sure your children have an alternate place to stay if you must be at work on a day when school has been delayed or canceled.
Please ensure that a neighbor, family member or center is able to care for or receive students, and please instruct students to report directly home or to their established care center immediately on arrival in the evening.
Winter Safety Tips for Students Walking to School or Bus Stop
Students should allow extra time to get to their school or bus stop in the morning. Arrival at the bus stop five (5) minutes before the scheduled pickup time is recommended.
Bright clothing will make students more visible for bus drivers and other motorists, especially in the early morning and late evening. Warm clothing is also recommended as transportation delays may occur.
Please walk with young children to their school or bus stop; older children should walk in groups. The location of a student’s bus stop may be different from their normal stop location if the district is operating on snow routes.
Pedestrian travel should be done on sidewalks or a safe walking path.
- When there is no sidewalk and you have to walk on the road, be sure to walk facing traffic.
- Walk across a street at corners, use crosswalks whenever possible.
- When crossing a street, look left, right and left.
- Listen for the sound of car motors, sirens, horns or emergency announcements before stepping into the street.

Know a girl who loves to sing? Since 1972, Northwest Girlchoir has offered outstanding music education and a welcoming community where girls can learn, grow and be themselves. We’re proud to serve over 250 girls in grades 1-12 from across the greater Puget Sound region.
