Got Chargers? Laurelhurst Elementary received 400 refurbished Kindles to be used in our classrooms. This generous gift did not come with chargers. Since the Kindle is compatible with Android phone chargers, we are requesting anyone +who has extra chargers (maybe tangled in your junk drawer) to consider dropping them by the school. The more chargers… the more access for our kids. Additional chargers will be purchased as needed!
Recess monitors needed- Our fantastic tutors, who also serve as recess monitors, do not start their work until a few weeks into school. We will need volunteers to help during lunch recess, 11:00 AM – 11:40 AM, to help get our students oriented and safe. If you are available, please contact Kristina Cerise at [email protected].
Equity/Tolerance Discussion Resources – From time to time, our teachers will need to speak about the educational aspects of inequity. These discussion happen on different levels based on grade levels. It may be as simple as addressing why do some people get to eat breakfast in the classroom. Fairness is a concern to our young students and it can be hard to understand why someone gets extra support. Our newsletters we will include a resource to help parents discuss equity and tolerance at home at a developmentally appropriate level. The Teaching Tolerance website also offers many resources. https://www.tolerance.org/
Gloria and Rosa Make Beautiful Music by (K-2) Two friends who attend different schools in the same community learn that one of their schools has no instruments for their music program, while the other has multiple different kinds. They use their friendship and musical abilities to confront this inequity and try to bring about change.
During World War II, a young German girl, Rose Blanche, inadvertently discovers a concentration camp not far from her town. She travels there frequently, taking food to the children on the other side of the barbed wire and meets a haunted fate the day she discovers the camp is gone.
