The Laurelhurst PTA Community Outreach

The Community Outreach Committee’s vision mirrors the Laurelhurst PTA goal “to
promote the welfare of children in school, at home, and in the community… and …to ensure that the
needs of our school community are being met.” Specifically, to advocate for students and families
who may struggle financially, to advocate for an inclusive learning and social school environment, and
to actively be a resource for our school community. The committee was formed to provide
continuation of services to students despite any change in LES Staff. The committee collaborates
with the school counselor and administrative secretary to protect the dignity and confidentiality of our
students.

The committee provides support to the community through the following progams:

  • Backpack Brigade
  • Giving Wreath
  • Summer Reading
  • Back-to-School Supplies
  • Scholarships

General academic PTA programs are provided for by the “Funding Futures” campaign in the fall. The
above programs are separate programs and are traditionally funded from a grant received from
Windermere Foundation, contributions from families, and Outreach Committee fundraising.

Our “Benevolent Bears” program works to develop students’ ideas for helping the community and following
through on those service projects. At LES our students participate in the RULER program (Recognizing emotions in self and others,
Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions, Labeling emotions accurately, Expressing
emotions appropriately and Regulating emotions effectively). This form of PBIS (Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports) helps students gain emotional intelligence. Participating in volunteer
service also supports students’ emotional intelligence and life skills of empathy, resilience, gratitude,
leadership and communication.
